The Impact of Contaminants on Microbial Communities in Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecosystems

We are pleased to announce a double conference hosted by the Pharm-ERA Doctoral Network, focusing on the critical issue of contaminant impacts on microbial communities in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. Two distinguished experts will share their latest research in this important field:

Dr. Dimitrios G. Karpouzas, University of Thessaly, Greece

Karpouzas

"How good indicators of the soil microbial toxicity of pesticides are ammonia-oxidizing microbes? - From single species to soil testing"

Dr. Dimitrios Karpouzas is a Professor of Environmental Microbiology at the University of Thessaly, Greece. His research explores the interactions between microbial communities and contaminants, with a particular focus on soil ecosystems. Dr. Karpouzas' work addresses the environmental impact of pesticides, examining how ammonia-oxidizing microbes can serve as reliable indicators for assessing soil microbial toxicity. His research spans laboratory experiments, field studies, and novel approaches to soil testing, offering insights into the broader implications of pesticide use on soil health and ecosystem services.

Dr. Mechthild Schmitt-Jansen, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), Germany

Schmitt-Jansen

"Aquatic microbial functions: from biological processes to ecosystem functioning"

Dr. Mechthild Schmitt-Jansen is a Senior Scientist at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig, Germany. Her research focuses on the roles of aquatic microbial communities in ecosystem processes, specifically how contaminants affect microbial functions and the overall health of aquatic ecosystems. Dr. Schmitt-Jansen’s work explores the complex interactions between microbial processes and the functioning of freshwater and marine ecosystems, emphasizing the impact of pollutants on microbial diversity and ecosystem services. Her interdisciplinary approach combines microbiology, ecology, and environmental science to inform sustainable water management practices and mitigate contamination risks in aquatic environments.
