Understanding the Hidden Pathways of Antibiotic Resistance in Aquatic Environments

Webinar BIOAQUA

Helena GUASCH and Stéphane PESCE presented their work on antimicriobial resistance spread in the environment, at the BIOAQUA COST action webinar series “Bridging Land and Water: Next-Generation Monitoring and Risk Assessment of Pharmaceuticals, AMR, and Pathogens”, Stéphane PESCE explored the complex web of factors that drive the spread of antibiotic resistance and pathogenic microorganisms in aquatic systems. His presentation highlighted the critical role of environmental continuums—such as soil-water interfaces and areas near human-made discharges—and the interplay with chemical pollutants. Together, these conditions can create contamination “hotspots,” amplifying the risks associated with microbiological pollutants in our water environments. His conference was complemented by a presentation from Helena GUASCH who expanded on the interaction between antibiotic resistance and plastic pollution in the environment.
